Application Process

DMVNow works with other agencies to provide additional products and services using its nationwide presence. Any DMV customer service center can provide certified copies of Virginia life records (birth, death, marriage, and divorce certificates) and hunting and fishing licenses. Select locations offer E-ZPass toll transponders.

DMVNow

The DMVNow portal provides registration and renewal information online. Residents both new and old are familiar with all the new Virginia DMV laws and can easily find electronic forms or driving schools. It is a great way to learn more about Virginia insurance requirements and then to shop for and purchase Virginia car insurance online.

An Overview Of The Application Process

In addition to its network of customer service centers, DMV 2 Go mobile offices, DMV Connect, branch websites, scales, and call centers, DMVNow offers a number of other services. Visit www.DMVNow.com to get started with the DMV. You will be able to complete over 40 DMV transactions and find out how to apply for a TRUE ID.

Apply In-Person

  • Get in touch with a customer service center at the DMV.
  • Fill out the Virginia Birth Certificate Form (DL 81) for birth certificates or the Virginia Vital Record Form (DL 82) for marriage, divorce, and death certificates.
  • Provide a valid photo ID
  • You must pay a fee of $14 for a record search (Note: these fees apply regardless of whether or not the DMV finds the record)

Apply By Mail

Please send your Virginia Vital Records application directly to the Virginia Department of Health Department of Vital Records, PO Box 1000, Richmond, Virginia 23218. Please provide a copy of your identification and a check or money order payable upon request. Your request must include the Condition Health service.

US Postal Service delivery times vary, but most customers receive their registration card and decal within five days. DMVNow recommends waiting 15 days to receive your decals before contacting them. This receipt, along with your registration card, will extend your current registration for up to 15 days after the renewal date.
